The survey findings confirm that the internet is increasingly an integral part of children's lives, and that for most, it is a positive experience. The proportion of young people who reported exposure to these risks is small, indicating that societal concern is overstated. In addition, within those children who did encounter risk, only a small proportion were upset by it.

Not only does this perspective put public anxiety about safety into perspective, but it also provides a critical lens through which to interpret children's rights and capabilities. However, the findings do show that a proportion of children are upset by their online experiences.

The authors suggest therefore that policy initiatives should be targeted at vulnerable groups rather than applying universal restrictions.

Chapters were tightly focused and followed a similar structure, making it easy to locate relevant information.

As such, it is a very valuable book that presents opportunities for policy, practice and future research.
